Troop 600

Troop 600 is located in Oak Ridge, North Carolina and is sponsored by Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church.  The Troop meets year-round every Monday night from 7:00 until 8:30.

Troop 600 is a Gold Level Troop. We are the only Troop in our area that has earned this designation every year the Journey to Excellence program has been in existence..
Outings are the sizzle of Boy Scouting.  Each month, the Troop goes on at least one outing.  These outings have included:

  • Sea Base in Florida
  • Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico
  • Northern Tier High Adventure Base in Minnesota
  • BSA National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill - 2010
  • BSA National Jamboree at The Summit - 2013
  • climbing and repelling in the North Carolina Mountains
  • backpacking on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia
  • snow skiing in West Viriginia
  • spelunking in Tennessee
  • canoeing down the Yadkin River
  • deep sea fishing off the coast of South Carolina
  • white water rafting in North Carolina and in West Virginia
  • beach trip to the NC coast
  • a zip-line adventure
  • a fishing excursion at Hagan Sea Base
  • Guilford District Camp-O-Rees
  • Old North State Camp-O-Ree

Troop 600 maintains a base camp just across the border of North Carolina in Virginia.

The Scouts of Troop 600 live the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.  We follow the directive of "Do a Good Turn Daily" and are known in our community for providing cheerful service.  Our service activities have included:

  • trail development and maintenance at the Cascades Park
  • providing manpower at the annual Oak Ridge Horse Show
  • manning the First Aid booth during the spring carnival at the local elementary school
  • teaching knots at the HORSEPOWER therapeutic riding outreach
  • partnering with our brother Scouts in Swaziland to help them construct a farm and a Scout's Own Service ring at their Scout camp

Troop 600 was founded in August 2006 and currently has 54 registered Scouts and 42 registered adult Scouters.  Our Scoutmaster is an Eagle Scout and Wood Badge graduate and has served on staff for various Council training courses.  He received the Scoutmaster Award of Merit and the Guilford District Award of Merit in 2010.  Our seven Assistant Scoutmasters are trained as are most of our Troop Committee members.  We have 10 registered Eagle Scouts, 31 members of the Order of the Arrow, and 6 Wood Badge trained leaders.  Since our founding, 23 Scouts have obtained the rank of Eagle Scout.  We have 17 Life Scouts working on the rank of Eagle Scout.

In 2013, we took a full troop contingent (34 Scouts and 4 adults) of Troop 600 members to the National Scout Jamboree - we were the only Troop in the Old North State Council to be afforded this honor.  We take complete crews to Sea Base and to Philmont every few years.

Troop 600 is open to all boys ages 11-17.  Prior Scouting experience is not required.  Membership at Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church is not required.

Troop 600 is comprised of Scouts from six Packs and we welcome boys from all Packs, not just from Pack 600.  There is no such thing as a "feeder pack."  Parent's should seek to visit several Troops with their son and select the Troop that most represents Scouting as defined by the Boy Scout Handbook.  We encourage parents to visit only Gold Level Troops (read more about this performance recognition program of the Boy Scouts of America here and use this to score the troops that you visit).
